Paris 2003 Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Local Organising Committee and the Société Française d’Allergologie et d’Immunologie Clinique, I am honoured and pleased to welcome you to the 22nd EAACI Congress that will take place in Paris (France), 7-11 June 2003. This is the fifth time that the EAACI will be meeting in France. Previous congresses have taken place in Paris (1950), Marseille (1971), Clermont Ferrand (1981) and again in Paris (1992). Paris neeeds no introduction, it is one of the most attractive cities in the world and is constantly evolving. Every year, new museums and monuments are opening or being renovated. The venue of the Congress, the Palais des Congrès, has recently been refurbished and offers one of the largest centres in Europe. The Local Organising Committee, the EAACI Executive Committee and representatives of EAACI Sections and Interest Groups have prepared an innovative scientific programme around the theme “Allergy as a global problem”. This year there are over 100 sessions (4 plenary sessions, 28 main symposia, 4 mini symposia, 14 oral abstract sessions, 12 poster discussion sessions, 8 company sponsored symposia and a series of satellite symposia) covering all aspects of Allergy, from basic science to diagnosis, treatment and socio-economy. An important part of this programme highlights the development of allergic diseases in all countries of the world with a specific emphasis on developing countries.We hope that the scientific programme will be of great relevance to all EAACI members as well as to non-members who are interested in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. 
This year, Le Louvre has been selected as the venue for the gala dinner.
The Grand Louvre has been reserved exclusively for the pleasure of the
EAACI Congress members. Following a visit of the museum, there
will be a cocktail and dinner party to enable those present to savour
the regional specialities of French cuisine.This congress is the culmination of more than three years’ work, and I must give special thanks to the wise guidance of Professor Anthony J Frew as well as to all members of the Scientific and Social Programme Committees whose advice and support over these years has helped us on so many occasions. Once again, I would like to welcome you to Paris to join us for the 22nd EAACI Congress and we all hope that you will have a memorable scientific and social event. Dear colleagues and friends, A warm welcome to Paris and to the Annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology! I hope that this historical and beautiful city may inspire us all to have a lively and fruitful Congress. The Local Organising Committee, under the leadership of Professor Jean Bousquet, has done a tremendous job in putting together a scientific programme of the highest quality, and at the same time offering us an exciting social programme. EAACI is very fortunate to count on its different National Societies to organise each year a prestigious Congress. Our annual Congresses are the backbone of our Academy, although we have a series of other initiatives that make EAACI the leading European scientific society in allergology and clinical immunology. Each year we organise summer schools for our junior members and joint symposia at the meetings of our national societies and at other scientific meetings; we have our official journals Allergy and PAI, and our EAACI Newsletter; we offer travel and research grants to our junior members; we sponsor our sections, interest groups and special committees which cover the whole 
area of allergology and clinical immunology and we create task forces
for writing position papers and defining some of the policies of our
Academy. Anyone interested in allergy and clinical immunology can
find something in our Academy in which he or she can participate. It is
worthwhile to become (or stay) a member of EAACI!In April we submitted a proposal to the 6th Framework Programme of the EU for a Network of Excellence in Allergy and Asthma. The title of the project is GA2LEN. If we are succeesful in our bid, this will strengthen considerably the interaction of our many research and clinical teams and, consequently, underline the leading role of EAACI in Europe and the world.
