| Dear friends of ISA,
The Swedish Sociological Association (SSA) and the proposed
Local Organising Committee hereby have the pleasure to invite
you to the XVII World Congress of Sociology, which will
take place in Göteborg, Sweden 11 - 17 July, 2010.
SSA has appointed Prof. Ulla Björnberg, one of the
most important personalities in Swedish Sociology Congress
President.
To arrange the congress, with its outstanding scientifi
c programme, in Göteborg will be a great stimulation
for sociologists and other social scientists in the Nordic
countries and add to the visibility of Sociology in the
northern part of Europe.
In 1947, Torgny T. Segerstedt was appointed the fi rst
Professor of Sociology in Sweden. Today, Sociology is taught
at all nine Swedish universities, and undergraduate courses
are held at a number of colleges in the country. Sociological
research is carried out at all universities, but also by
sociologists working at colleges and working with social
planning and evaluation. Thus, during its first fifty years
Swedish Sociology has established itself as a major social
scientifi c discipline.
Hosting the XVII World Congress of Sociology in 2010 is
a great honour for Göteborg, Sweden.
Göteborg is an excellent venue for major events and
congresses, easily accessible from around the world. Not
only does Göteborg feature a compact city centre with
virtually everything within walking distance, but the city’s
spectacular surroundings, closeness to the sea and the stunning
archipelago guarantee a whole new congress experience, far
from traditional big city congresses. Given the city centre’s
compact layout, congresses enjoy high visibility. Congresses
are extended in a pleasant way outside the formal programme
and delegates meet spontaneously and naturally in the streets,
at cafés and at restaurants.
On behalf of the Swedish Sociological Association and the
Local Organising Committee:
Welcome to Göteborg!
