european Leadership
Development Programme (EuLDP)
Leadership skills are important for any ophthalmologist
and in particular for those who are active
in professional societies. Therefore, SOE has sponsored
several European ophthalmologists to take
part in the Leadership Development Programme
organised by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Recognising the complex nature of Europe, SOE
has now set up its own EuLDP with the aim to
identify future leaders of European Ophthalmology,
to offer basic leadership training adapted for
ophthalmology and to provide an informal network
of peers. The inaugural course of EuLDP
took place in September 2005. The first working
meeting was held in Stockholm in April 2006 and
was organised by Stefan Seregard.
SOE Lectures
As from the 2005 SOE Congress in Berlin, the
national societies of the SOE each appoint a special
SOE Lecture to be presented at each nation’s
annual meeting. The lecture is to be given by the
most accomplished clinician/researcher under the
age of 45. The lecturer is selected by each National
Society and the decision is lauded by SOE.
SOE Educational Grants for
Ophthalmologists-in-training
from East European countries
The Council of SOE offers a number of scholarships
for ophthalmologists-in-training from East
European countries to visit Ophthalmic Centres in
Western Europe.

East European country (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, The Czech Republic,
